| Who invented midwives? |
| Midwifery is an art as old as time itself. All societies have had a special person within the community who has helped women in childbirth. The skills were often passed down from mother to daughter through the generations.
Today, midwives are still as important as ever, and in most of the UK are now acknowledged as the 'lead clinician' in all pregnancy-related matters and childbirth. Doctors still have a role, but are much less prominent in antenatal care than they used to be.
